On July 14, the GSPost went to different focus areas interviewing the teachers and scholars in the class. Computer Science, new to GSP this year, was one of the many focus areas interviewed. This class is taught by Kristian Klane, a teacher at Lexington Catholic. When asked about the essential topic of the class Kristian said, “Learning how to code in C++” and “Learning the basics and fundamentals of computer programming”.
Kristian also shares that what he enjoys most about working with the scholars is the ability to help them and give them pushes in the right direction. He says, “I like being able to walk around and give them pushes in the right direction. Little hint here, little hint here. Otherwise leave them alone to try and solve the problems themselves.”
When asked to describe the class in one word, Kristian described it as “Challenging”. Similarly, the scholars in the class would say it is “intriguing” and “esoteric”. Gavin Williams from Ryle High School says he picked intriguing because he is learning something new everyday. As for Daniel Smith from Trinity High School, he says the class is intriguing because of how interesting and obscure it is.
When Gavin and Daniel were asked about what they were taking away from the class they both had similar answers. Gavin said “Learning to code in C++” while Daniel said, “Learning different ways to communicate to a machine.” These two have both said they have gained knowledge of new programming languages as C++ while being here at GSP. This class certainly teaches a lot about computer science and will be a pick for scholars in the future applying for GSP. This class will help prepare scholars for future careers where they have to utilize technology.
