Plenty of peppers pickling proudly presented on a platform
One entering the third floor of South Oakley on Monday, July 13 would immediately notice the burning aroma of spicy peppers and vinegar. Why would this happen? Three words–Agribusiness and Biotechnology.
Reporters from the GSPost observed a fun class this past Monday. In this unique focus area, students put their taste buds and creative minds to use by making a variety of hot sauces based on their own taste preference. Professor Iin Handayani said “My focus area is based around Agribusiness and Biotechnology, the hot sauce combines fermentation (biotechnology) with the advertisement of labeling hot sauces (agribusiness).” Professor Iin went on to explain how students were able to express what they personally wanted to learn within this area. She used those responses to decide which projects the classes would explore, , which is where the hot sauce idea originated
However, the focus area is more than just making spicy condiments . Scholar Abby stated “In this class, we’ve really highlighted how it’s our responsibility to take care of agriculture in the future.” She detailed specifics, such as preservation policies and ways to implement technology into the future of agriculture. Scholar Matthew even mentioned how Iin has taught them Agribusiness in such a way that it has opened their minds to new ideas and left lasting impacts on them. Professor Iin seems to have influenced these scholars in a special way, as scholars described this class as not only memorable, but extremely exhilarating and adventurous.

The scholars seem to have left a similar mark on Iin. Iin says “[my scholars] are so fulfilling… and high curiosity.” It is clear to see that Iin has a steadfast devotion to her scholars, as well as her teachings. Away from GSP, Iin is a professor of soil sciences. She is able to effectively convert her knowledge of being a Professor here at Murray State to the classroom of the Governors Scholars Program.
Some scholars, such as Jacob said that during applications, Agribusiness and Biotechnology was not a high choice for him, but after a few weeks of class, his mindset completely shifted. Jacob states “We have amazing people in this class and I have had the best time.” Jacob’s point of view is shared by many other scholars. Why does Jocob feel this way? Three words–Agribusiness and Biotechnology.
